Papers, 1834-1892.

Bulk of papers document Dr. Hunt's service as an army surgeon during the Civil War in Virginia, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas. Correspondence concerns his medical work and army life, including troop movements, encampment plans, supplies and food. An active abolitionist and Republican, Dr. Hunt records opinions on army policies and politics. Papers also include military and hospital records, and receipts and invoices from the Medical Surveyors Offices. Also, copy letters, 1835-1838, from Horace Hunt (1788-1868), in his role as recording secretary of the New York Bible Society.

Sanford B. Hunt (1825-1884), a Civil War surgeon, was born in Ithaca, N.Y. in 1825. Hunt was an anatomy professor at Buffalo Medical College (N.Y.) and served as editor of two Buffalo newspapers. During the Civil War he was a surgeon at Fort Monroe and later, Surgeon-in-Chief of the Army of the South-West in New Orleans. In 1866, he moved to Newark, N.J.
